- This program is "Shareware". You are encouraged to copy and
- freely distribute Cohort. If you use the program you are
- asked to send payment, in an amount comensurate with its
- utility, to the above address.
-
- I. REQUIREMENTS:
- 1. An IBM PC or close compatible computer.
- 2. 128K of available memory; 82K memory over and above
- application program memory if you intend to use Cohort in
- the memory resident mode.
- 3. Any configurable printer.
- II. LOADING:
- Cohort can be invoked on of two ways:
- 1. As a stand alone program.
- From the DOS prompt type Cohort <RETURN>; the program
- will present the main menu.
- 2. As a memory resident program
- From the DOS prompt type Cohort /L <RETURN>
- This loads Cohort into your computer's memory, setting
- aside 82Kb of memory for its exclusive use. A short
- message will be displayed, if all goes well, informing
- you of the current "HotKey" -- the key used to invoke
- Cohort from within you other applications.
-
- III. COMMAND SELECTION
- Selecting a main menu item and pressing <RETURN> invokes
- a sub-menu. Alternately, pressing the first letter
- of the main menu item will access the appropriate
- sub-menu. Similarly, the sub-menu can be accessed
- either by selecting the item with the cursor keys
- and pressing <RETURN> or by selecting the
- CAPITALIZED letter of the appropriate selection.
-
- IV. THE ESC KEY:
- Pressing <Esc> from any selection prompt aborts the
- command; from any sub-menu it returns to the main
- menu; from the main menu it Quits the program.
-

- 4. Setup
- 1) Cohort v. 4.4 - displays address for contributions
- 2) Unload Cohort - unloads the memory resident version of
- Cohort and frees the memory it had set aside.
- WARNING: this must ONLY be invoked from the DOS
- command line. If you invoke this command (and
- answer yes to the Continue? question) while you are
- inside an application program, you will be dumped to
- DOS and any unsaved work will be lost.
- 3) Edit control codes - this is the central control command for
- Cohort. Cohort comes to you completely empty. You
- must install it for your particular printer. This is
- the command that allows you to do so. All of the
- commands in the previous three menus require that
- cohort send to the printer a series of "Escape" codes.
- These codes must be supplied from your printer manual.
- However, you need only enter these codes into the program
- once. After you determine which of the available
- functions you wish to activate, and you supply them to
- cohort through this command, you can then Save the
- current setup into a new copy of Cohort. Thereafter,
- when you invoke Cohort it will contain the settings you
- have entered. (See Save settings, below).
- Pressing and holding down the "^" and the "[" keys, that is
- shift-6 on the top row and left bracket, will enter
- into Cohort the "Esc" key that must proceed virtually
- all printer codes. Consult your printer manual, if
- this doesn't make sense.
- 4) HotKey: Alt-F10 - shows the current HotKey, and
- allows you to change it.
- Valid HotKey possibilities are:
- a. Alt F1 - F10
- b. Shift F1-F10
- c. Ctrl F1-F10
- d. Alt 1-0,-,=
- 5) Printer name - allows you to change the name of the
- currently installed printer.
- 6) Mono CG - No - displays the current setting for whether or
- not you are using a monochrome graphics screen. Cohort
- can determine if you have a Monochrome or Graphics
- adaptor. It sets the display colors and attributes
- accordingly. However, the color settings are sometimes
- difficult to see on a graphics system that has a
- monochrome display. Setting this option to "Yes"
- changes the colors to monochrome even on a graphics
- screen. This setting can be saved to disk by selecting
- Save setup.
- 7) Save setup - saves the currently active Hotkey and
- MonoCG settings permanently to disk so that the
- next time you invoke Cohort with the "/L"
- parameter, these customized settings will be the
- new defaults. This will also save the current
- "control codes" as edited into the program under
- the "Edit contro code" option.
-
- ======================================================
- In order for Cohort to create a new version of
- itself, containing the customized HotKey, the MonoCG
- variable, and the current control code, program must
- reside in the currently active directory (you can
- change directory under Dos commands), and must be
- named COHORT.COM.

- 5. NOTEPAD

- envelopes. The notepad memos can be saved and loaded from
- disk. The current notepad will remain in memory until
- cleared, saved, or a new memo is loaded.

- f. Ctrl-End - erases from the cursor to the end of line
- g. Ctrl-RightArrow - moves forward to next word
- h. Ctrl-LeftArrow - moves back to previous word

- 4) FORMATTING:
- a. Alt-I - begins and ends Italics
- b. Alt-B - begins and ends Bold
- c. Alt-U - begins and ends Underline
- These codes must be entered a second time in
- order to turn off formatting. (e.g.
- <alt-u>anyword<alt-u>)
- 5) Notes on the Notepad:
- a. If you try to load an ascii file larger than 66 lines
- Cohort will read the first 66 lines and then stop.
- Avoid this.
- b. Nothing will be sent to the Cohort until you select
- Print (F6)
- c. With Version 2.0 of Cohort, the text currently inside the
- notepad remains in memory even if you exit to the Main Menu.
- This allows you to type a memo, reset printer fonts or
- margins, return to the notepad to print.
- The text of the notepad will remain available until
- a. You Clear the page with F9.
- b. You exit the non-memory resident version of Cohort.
- c. You load another memo from disk.

- manually using the Offset command.
- 3. There is now an option to print at either 6 lines per inche
- or 8 lines per inch.
- 4. A complete RESET will be performed if Print was activated in
- Landscape mode; Otherwise Font selections will remain
